Join me today to celebrate the FIFTH wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Blaney. Strolling memory lane of my wedding cake gallery recently, THAT cake stopped me in my tracks, as it always does. The one with the radiant colorful flowers.
In my opinion, nothing, absolutely nothing, is more elegant than white. Shades of white. Neutrals. To be honest, color gives me anxiety. Not necessarily extremely pastel pastels, but BRIGHT, flashy, deep . . . color. Unless, of course, the color is highlighted as florals. Aaah, okay, there it is. A crisp white canvas, and beautiful radiant florals. Yes, there we have it.
During our Cake Tasting & Consultation in my BakeStudio, Darby and Nelson communicated their idea to have the cake decorated with fresh pressed florals to achieve an ombre effect. The design was communicated to their florist, and Dede of Chesapeake Blooms executed the florals perfectly. Talk about a floral designer who knows her craft! We collaborated back and forth with the types of florals and the look they would achieve. Dede wanted to tie in the flowers from her other pieces (coral/orange rose, dark evergreen and blue thistle).
Many flowers I “de-petaled” and installed flat, and some were installed whole. The same with greens – mostly just the leaves flat (no stem). There were seasonal flourishes (free spirit roses, mini roses, Angelica thistle / Eryngium bay leaf and olive branch for greenery, blooming herbs, cornflower, chrysanthemums) and we lucked out with some violets and pansies; I sparsely scattered some dried accents mail ordered from Freshly Preserved.

When I arrived at Great Oak Manor with the cake, took a quick perusal of the surroundings, spinning around like a child playing Ring Around the Rosy, everything in my view was stunning. Even the mirrored disco balls hanging above the dance floor, which probably reflected the dropped jaw and poppy eyes of yours truly, because I was stunned. And to this day, those disco balls were integral to one of my favorite installs of all time. (In all honesty, when that element was mentioned to me during the consultation process, I had to quickly cover my immediate look of horror with a pasted-on smile and polite nod of my head). But the end result was most spectacular.

TODAY in my BakeStudio, my style is still simple, elegant, traditional, classic, sophisticated, timeless. But occasionally, we certainly enjoy being a little extra. Darby and Brendan’s wedding details checked off every significant box, and exactly five years later, everyone is still talking about that extraordinary day.
